This seemingly normal looking house was in the clearing where we were trying to find a way up into the radar. And I have read on some of the historical sites on Camp Hero that much of the base was designed to look like a fishing village from the air. This seems a bit ludicrous to me, what would a small fishing village need with a gigantic radar dish, one that I assume was not camouflaged in any way? But this house looked to be quite normal as houses go, if a little lacking in windows. It was completely boarded up, but still held an unexpected surprise. As we were being thorough in our search of the area, we walked around the back of the house and my jaw dropped at what I saw.
The top of an underground tunnel was exposed, leading into the large hill behind the house. I will note that this was the hill directly under the radar, and my guess is that there is most likely an underground complex beneath the radar. I have two reasons for this line of thinking, one, the tunnel itself and two, every single hill that we saw and checked out, every single one turned out to be man made with a reinforced structure underneath it. The reason for this was apparent, camouflage from the air, but the extent of it was a little more than what we expected. The tunnel, from what I could gather, was easily large enough for a man to pass through. And while there were none of the usual signs of an underground complex (as we will see) it is evident that there was probably a large complex under the radar. Next to the house was this round concrete structure. I have no idea what it was, I walked around it and found no entrance or ladder leading to the top.
In the forest across from the house, there were several manhole covers arising from the forest floor. Some were sealed, and others had ladders going down, but were flooded, and there was no way I was climbing down to see what they were or where they led. Although I believe they could be opened from the inside, it is my opinion they were meant only to be opened from above the ground. I took pictures of several, but will only include one here as they were all pretty much similar. I would have liked more time to study these, at least to have perhaps made a general map of how they were layed out, were there more etc... however it was by this time that we were given the ultimatum to leave the base with all do haste.
Below is a picture of one of the vehicles that were driving about, in fact this is the truck whose occupants told us to get out immediately. While these are just state park employees, and there are rumors that a large part of the base will soon be opened to the public, they seemed to be doing nothing except patrolling the grounds for intruders, as when we snuck back onto the base we were forced to avoid them several more times.
